Volleyball Looks to Remain Unbeaten in A-Sun

Oct. 12, 2004

After facing Lipscomb on Friday night at 7 pm, Florida Atlantic University's volleyball team will try to knock off the first place team in the Atlantic Sun on Saturday afternoon at 1 pm. Belmont University and Florida Atlantic are both undefeated headed into the weekend and both look to remain on top of the conference.

Lipscomb holds a 6-12, 1-2 A-Sun record heading into the weekend, with its conference win coming against Stetson. Since that 3-1 win on October 1, the Bisons have dropped three straight including loses to Jacksonville and Mercer.

Brittney Lanius leads the Nashville team with 243 kills and 190 digs. Her 25 service aces ranks her second on the team behind Alex Scruggs' 26 aces.

Missy Rachel and Emily Smith run the offense and have recorded 224 and 439 assists, respectively.

After Belmont meets UCF in Orlando on Friday night, the Bruins head to Boca Raton for a 1 pm meeting with FAU. The Bruins enter the weekend leading the conference with a 5-0 conference record and 15-3 overall record. They are currently on a four-game winning streak with each win coming against an A-Sun team. They defeated preseason no. 3 team Georgia State in three games last weekend. BU is led by Lindsay Cleveland's 254 kills and 35 service aces. She is ranked second in the A-Sun with 4.31 kills per game behind FAU's Iana Andonova and leads the Atlantic Sun with 0.59 service aces per game.

Freshman Colleen Nilson runs the offense and leads the A-Sun with 13.59 assists per game and has aced opponents 31 times.

As a team, Belmont holds a .286 hitting percentage and averages over four more kills than its opponents. The Bruins lead the conference in hitting percentage (.286), assists (15.14), kills (16.73), and service aces (2.37). FAU is listed second in every category behind BU. FAU holds a .226 hitting percentage and averages 13.93 assists per game,15.34 kills per game and 2.09 aces per game.

Coming off of two non-conference matches on Monday and Tuesday, Florida Atlantic looks to start a new winning streak. The squad is led by Iana Andonova's 266 kills and .335 hitting percentage. The junior also has 32 service aces and is second on the team with 30 blocks.

Courtenay Kiebert has been at the helm of the offense and has 570 assists as FAU is hitting .220 as a team.

Makra Condill leads the team and is second in the conference with 279 digs.
