![]() Volleyball Opens Week at Home
Sept. 21, 2004 Four weeks into the season, Florida Atlantic University will play its first home match of the year when the Lady Owls host the University of South Florida in FAU Gym on Wednesday night at 7 pm. The team will then head back out on the road to UNC-Greensboro where the team will participate in the UNCG Tournament. FAU (5-1) has won five straight and has not last a game in the last three matches. The Owls are led by A-Sun Player-of-the-Week Iana Andonova. The junior middle blocker has 91 kills and 16 service aces. Libero Makra Condill leads the team defensively with 92 digs. USF (2-6) is hungry for a win after suffering five-straight loses and the Bulls look to keep their streak alive with their 13th consecutive victory over the Owls. Junior Flavia Silveira leads the team with 4.48 kills per game, while freshman Kristina Fabris, who is averaging 3.19 kills per game, was named to the all-tournament team at the Northern Iowa Classic this past weekend.
On Friday, FAU will face Memphis and Morgan State for the first time in program history on Friday. Memphis could be the toughest test of the UNCG tournament as the Tigers enter with a 10-4 record. The team defeated A-Sun member UCF 3-1 earlier this season and swept the Conference USA Player and Setter of the Week honors this past week. Tiara Gilkey leads the team with 181 kills, while Heather Watts averages 12.71 assists per game. A strong defense has four players with over 100 digs. Morgan State (6-8) finds its strength from freshman Esther Johnson. Johnson has won the MEAC Rookie of the Week honors three times already this season and holds the team together with 179 kills and 182 digs. Another new face for the Owls will be UNC-Asheville. The Bulldogs enter the weekend with a 4-6 record and have a balanced team. Three players have over 100 kills and 100 digs. The strong suit of the squad is its blocking, outblocking opponents 70-62. Against A-Sun opponents they are 1-1 with a win over Lipscomb before Campbell defeated UNCA in Buies Creek, NC. Tournament host, UNC Greensboro will be the final opponent in the two-day event. The Spartans hold a 1-9 record and have lost their last eight contests. The team's only loss came to A-Sun member Lipscomb, while two losses were at the hands of Gardner-Webb and Belmont. Freshman Alysia Rosvold leads the team with 90 kills, while upperclassmen Adrian Hicks and Rebekah Faulise anchor the setting and defensive spots. Hicks has 282 assists while Faulise leads the team with 160 digs. |
