Volleyball Closes Out Most Successful Season in DI

Nov. 19, 2004

Final Stats

Florida Atlantic University's volleyball team closed out its best season in Division I history with a loss to Jacksonville University at the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament Friday night in five games.

After spotting the Dolphins a four-point lead, A-Sun Player of the Year, Iana Andonova got the Owls on the board with a kill. FAU took its first lead of the match in the midst of a six-point run behind the serving of Jenn Way. Lindsey Bell (Colorado Springs, CO) provided much of the offense during the run with three straight kills from the outside.

JU (14-12) closed the gap to within 22-21 but saw the Owls pull away with five straight points and Cayse Kaveny (Cupertino, CA) closed out the game with one of her match-high 24 kills.

FAU (21-7) took the early lead in game two before JU tied the score at 15-15 and took its first lead of the game. The Dolphins took their largest lead at 24-21 on a Lindsey Ward and Joanna Silva block but the Owls fought back to a 27-27 tie and took the final lead of the game on a Lindsey Bell kill. Cayse Kaveny followed the ball with a solo block in the middle to advance to game point. A Jacksonville timeout shifted the momentum as two FAU attacking errors kept the game alive. Down 31-30, Lindsay Ward came through with a kill before JU took the lead on a Petya Borisova kill. The Dolphins evened the match at 1-1 on an FAU attacking error.

The two teams battled to a 19-19 tie in game three before a Florida Atlantic ball handling error started a five-point run that the Owls never made up and JU finished off game three with three straight points and an Erin Donivan ace.

When faced with elimination the Owls came up with their biggest win of the match in game four. After a 9-9 tie, FAU went on a 13-5 run to take a 22-14 lead and force a fifth game.

Iana Andonova scored FAU's first point in game five after spotting the Dolphins a 6-0 lead. The Owls never managed to get back in the game as they fell to JU for the first time at the A-Sun tournament history.

Florida Atlantic won the battle on offense and defense statistically with 20 more kills and 13 digs. Andonova posted 24 kills and Kelly Paiva, Lindsey Bell, Janelle Sarauw all posted double-digit kills for FAU.

Libero of the Year, Makra Condill came up with a match-high and career-high 36 digs.
