Volleyball Drops Season Finale :: Team honors seniors

Florida Atlantic University honored its seniors on Saturday afternoon at FAU Gym, but the Owls could not pull out a win as they fell to Arkansas State 3-2 (30-25, 32-3-, 23-30, 17-30, 15-13). Seniors Lindsey Bell and Cayse Kaveny both had big nights. Bell finished with 18 digs, while Kaveny posted 17 kills and seven blocks in the season finale.

After dropping game one, the Owls recovered from a 15-10 deficit to tie the game at 26 and took their first lead of the game at 27-26 on a Janelle Sarauw (St. Thomas, V.I.) kill. After going ahead 30-29, FAU could not hold on for the win as three FAU errors saw the Indians take a 2-0 lead.

FAU (21-6) took the next two games by posting their highest hitting percentages of the match and holding ASU to hitting percentages under .150. FAU used four blocks in game three and five blocks in game four to tally a season-high 16 blocks on the night.

With a 13-11 lead in game five, the Owls looked to have the match under wraps. After an Arkansas State timeout, Beth Jones recorded a kill to decrease the lead to one. Florida Atlantic then called a timeout before the Indians (25-7) recorded the final three points and finished the match on an four-point run, capitalized by a Phillipa Soulsby and Beth Jones block.

Iana Andonvoa (Margate, FL) led the Owls with 19 kill, while Paiva (Minas Gerais, Brazil) finished with another double-double with 17 kills and 18 digs. Kaveny (Cupertino, CA) rounded out the trio with 17 kills and her seven blocks ranked only behind Sarauw's nine.

Makra Condill (Crystal Lake, IL) recorded an impressive 31 digs to lead the team defensively. ASU's libero Tessa Millikan led her team with 27 digs, while Giedre Tarnauskaite finished with a match-high 24 kills.

The Owls enter the Atlantic Sun Tournament as the no. 1 seed. The tournament begins on Friday in Orlando. FAU will take on the winner of the no.5 UCF/no. 4 Jacksonville match at 4:30 pm on Friday. The finals will take place on Saturday at 1:00 pm and will air tape-delayed on Sunshine Network at 11:00 pm et.
