FAU Volleyball Downed by Miami

Oct. 29, 2003

Final Stats

Despite a strong blocking performance by Florida Atlantic University, the Owls were defeated by the University of Miami 3-0 in FAU Gymnasium on Wednesday night. Junior middle blocker Cayse Kaveny (Cupertino, CA) participated in six of FAU's 10 total team blocks.

The Hurricanes led wire to wire in game one and used a strong hitting performance from Leyre Santaella Sante to win the game 18-30. Santaella Sante posted 5 of her match-high 18 kills in game one.

The Owls were able to contain the UM offense better in game two and held them to a .163 hitting percentage as FAU picked up 6 blocks in the game. Florida Atlantic managed to pull within two at 14-12 with a Janelle Sarauw (St. Thomas, V.I.) block solo of Santaella Sante but the Hurricanes pulled away for the 30-25 victory.

A 7-6 lead graced the Owls in the third game but UM quickly regained control after an FAU service error and a block by Karla Johnson and Elizabeth Tyson caused the momentum to shift to the visiting team. FAU hung around and tied the game at 14 but a .303 hitting percentage in game three was too much for the Owls to overcome.

Iana Andonova (Margate, FL) guided FAU with 11 kills and eight digs, while Kaitlin Kozak was the defensive star for UM with 11 digs.

Krista Klawitter (Bowmanville, Ontario) split time at setter with Jeana Boyle (Boca Raton, FL) and the two picked up 18 and 12 assists, respectively.

Florida Atlantic will honor its senior on Friday night in a match against Atlantic Sun foe Mercer at 7 pm. The Owls will return to the court on Saturday at 2 pm for a meeting with league-leading Georgia State.
