FAU Loses Heartbreaker To UCF In Three

Oct. 19, 2001

Final Stats

Two undefeated conference teams met at FAU Gym to decide who should be ranked atop the Atlantic Sun Conference Friday night as Florida Atlantic University (8-11, 5-1 A-Sun) hosted the University of Central Florida (15-2, 6-0 A-Sun). The two teams were neck and neck through the first two games but UCF was able to pull out a three-game victory 31-29, 32-30, 30-19.

After spotting the Golden Knights a five point lead in game one, the Lady Owls slowly fought back to tie the game at 28, when Jessica Kahn recorded the only block solo of the night against a Shelly Driggers attack, Driggers would finish the night with a .417 average. The two teams traded points before tying the game at 29, and then two quick kills by UCF brought the game to a close.

It was UCF's turn to fight back in game two as FAU took a 21-11 lead behind five kills by Jessica Kahn. Leyre Santaella Sante then served six straight points to get UCF back in the game. The Golden Knight's used the momentum to carry them through the game.

After game two, the two teams matched up statistically. With UCF hitting .235 with 26 digs and FAU hitting .213 with 29 digs, it was hard for FAU to go to the locker room down 2-0. UCF came out ready in game three and posted a .333 offensive clip compared to the Lady Owls' .086.

Jessica Kahn (Apopka, FL) finished the night with 12 kills, a .350 average and three blocks to lead FAU. Marja Valkeavuori (Riihimaki, Finland) contributed 10 digs after sitting out the last match due to an injury.

FAU will continue conference play next Friday and Saturday as they host Campbell and undefeated A-Sun member, Georgia State.
