Volleyball Downs Gardner-Webb 3-0

Oct. 17, 2003

Final Stats

Florida Atlantic University's volleyball team won its fifth consecutive match Friday as the Owls defeated Gardner-Webb University 30-22, 30-28, 30-21 in Atlantic Sun play. FAU used a season-high 15 services aces to improve to 10-9, 4-0 A-Sun, while GWU drops to 6-16, 1-2 A-Sun. Lauren McHugh (Lighthouse Point, FL) led the charge with a career-high nine service aces, one shy of the FAU record.

Freshman Janelle Sarauw was on target in game one as she posted six kills, but it was McHugh who gave the Owls a spark. Trailing 13-9, McHugh recorded four of her service aces as FAU went on an 11-point run to take its first lead of the match. Florida Atlantic closed out the game with a 10-2 run.

Gardner-Webb again harassed the Owls and led in game two until the 25th point before two straight GWU attacking errors gave the momentum to FAU to close out the game. Kristie Brinkley led the Bulldog offense with 11 kills in the match as Gardner-Webb managed to out hit FAU .182-.167 but could not pull out the win. Brinkley finished with a team-high 12 kills ahead of Maggie Cornwall's 10.

The Owls dominated game three and only trailed for one point in the game before pulling out their fourth conference victory.

Middle hitter, Cayse Kaveny (Cupertino, CA) finished with a match-high 15 kills and a .462 hitting percentage. Makra Condill (Crystal Lake, IL) won the spot as the libero and finished with 16 digs. The Owls defense picked up 54 digs in the match.

Carrie Brinkley dished out 26 assists for the Bulldogs while her counterpart, Jeana Boyle (Boca Raton, FL) picked up 38 to increase her lead in the FAU record books after breaking the career assists record on Saturday.

Florida Atlantic returns to the court Saturday at 2 pm, when A-Sun foe Campbell visits Boca Raton after playing UCF on Friday evening.
