FAU Wins Big Over Mercer

An aggressive Florida Atlantic University team (5-9, 2-0 A-Sun) took the court in their second Atlantic Sun conference match on Friday evening as they were able to dispose of Mercer University (13-7, 0-2 A-Sun) in three games, 30-16, 30-21, 30-9. Aggressive serving gave the Lady Owls 12 aces in the match. Jeana Boyle, Marja Valkeavuori, and Kari Dailey each finished with a season-high three aces.

FAU fell behind early in game one before tying it at 10 and would only trail for three points during the rest of the match. Marja Valkeavuori, (Riihimaki, Finland) used a wicked serve to rally the Lady Owls and score eight straight points to go up 21-10 and give FAU confidence. The two teams traded points until Kari Dailey served the final three points of the game.
 

 

In game two, Florida Atlantic jump out to the 5-0 lead before the Bears' got on the board with a kill from Katie Plummer. The Lady Owls then used blocking to take control as they had five of their nine blocks of the night in game two.

Five FAU players finished with hitting percentages over .300 as they dominated game three. The Lady Owls accumulated 18 kills in the game compared to the Bear's 20 kills in the match.

Mercer was led by Katie Plummer and Molly Gabri with six kills and eight digs, respectively.

Danyielle Smith (Seminole, FL) finished with 12 kills, a .478 hitting percentage, and 11 digs for FAU.

Florida Atlantic travels to Nashville, Tennessee for a 2:00 match with Belmont on Sunday.
