Volleyball Falls to Memphis

Sept. 24, 2004

Final Stats

Florida Atlantic University dropped its first volleyball match on Friday morning after putting together six consecutive wins. A 1-3 loss to Memphis at the UNC Greensboro Tournament dropped the Owls to 6-2 on the year. Cayse Kaveny finished the first match of the four-match tournament with 17 kills, while Makra Condill recorded 17 digs and three service aces.

After winning game one 30-25 by posting a .372 hitting percentage, FAU saw the Memphis offense come alive. The Tigers (12-4) had four players record double-digit kills and hit .309 as a team, the highest a team has hit against FAU this season.

Memphis led for all of game two before FAU held a 3-0 lead to open game three. The two teams battled to a 10-10 tie and were as close as 13-15 before five straight points behind the serving of Tiara Gilkey gave the Tigers an insurmountable 20-13 lead.

Gilkey was one of two Memphis players to finish with a double-double as she collected a team-high 16 kills and added 14 digs. Nancy Nellans finished with 14 kills, 21 digs and seven aces for the Tigers.

FAU tied game four at 8-8 on a Iana Andonova kill before the Tigers closed out the match on a 22-13 run.

Andonova and Paiva finished with 15 and 13 kills, respectively.

FAU will play again this evening at 5:30 pm against Morgan State.
