Volleyball Overpowers Bethune-Cookman

Sept. 17, 2004

Florida Atlantic University's volleyball team defeated Bethune-Cookman College for the 24th straight time Friday afternoon in DeLand, FL as the Owls defeated the Wildcats 30-18, 30-23, 30-17 in a makeup match from last weekend. FAU posted a .355 hitting percentage to overpower B-CC and improve to 3-1 on the year.

FAU dominated out of the middle as Iana Andonova (Margate, FL) and Cayse Kaveny (Cupertino, CA) finished with 17 and 15 kills, respectively. The two middle hitters combined for only three attacking errors in 44 attempts.

Courtenay Kiebert (Hope, ID) made her first career start for FAU and dished out 31 assists, while her counterpart from Bethune-Cookman, Megan Myers, finished the afternoon with 21 assists.

The Wildcats (0-1) hung around in game one only trailing 9-8 before FAU rolled through behind the serving of Kelly Paiva. The Owls scored seven points with Paiva serving to take a 25-14 lead and then closed out the game on an Andonova kill.

Both offenses geared up for game two as B-CC hit .321 and kept the game close until 17-15 when Andonova served five straight points with two service aces. The First-Team All-Conference member finished the match with four aces.

As aggressive as the Wildcats seemed in game two, the team came out flat in game three and only managed six kills and eight errors to drop their first match of the season.

FAU will play two matches in DeLand on Saturday against Lehigh and a nonconference match against Stetson. Start times are set for 10 am and 1 pm.
