A career-high 34 kills from Kelly Paiva guided Florida Atlantic University past Eastern Washington in the team's second match of the USF Best Western Invitational 3-1 on Friday. FAU defeated USF in an earlier match 3-0. Katie Arvidson led FAU with 18 kills against the Bulls. Arvidson (Franklin, TN) finished with a match-high five blocks but the Owls (8-0) were out-blocked by USF 7-6 despite the 30-24, 31-29, 30-15 FAU win. The Bulls also outnumbered the Owls with 41 digs. FAU led with 51 kills with the main contributions from Arvidson, Kelly Paiva (Minas Gerais, Brazil) and Justin Petry (Trumansburg, NY) with 18, 13 and 11 kills, respectively. Arvidson and Petry both finished with hitting percentages over .450 as the team built a .342 hitting percentage for the match. Casey LaRocca (St. Louis, MO) finished with a match-high 37 assists, while Marka Condill (Crystal Lake, IL) and Dimitra Samas (Jamaica, NY) led the team defensively with 15 and 13 digs, respectively. USF (0-4) had two players record double-digit kills as the Bulls were held to a .191 hitting percentage. Kristina Fabris finished with 17 kills followed by Ashley Reavis' 10 kills. Against the Eagles (5-3) the Owls finished with 74 kills, 17 more then their opponents. Eastern Washington did record more blocks and service aces than FAU but still fell 30-23, 30-22, 18-30, 30-28.
Arvidson, Petry and Janelle Saruaw all recorded more than 10 kills and Sarauw finished with a .467 hitting percentage to lead the team to a hitting percentage of over .300 for the fourth time this season. In addition to her 34 kills, Paiva added a match-high 15 digs and Condill added 14 to increase her season total to 115 and 3.83 digs per game. On Saturday, FAU will face Appalachian State in the team's final match of the USF Best Western Invitational. |
