Volleyball Sputters in Five-game Match

Sept. 7, 2002

Final Stats

In the first five-game match of the season, Florida Atlantic University set a school record with 26 block assists but fell to Gonzaga University in the second day of action in the Montana State Mizuno/Holiday Inn Classic with a 3-2 loss.

After giving up the first point of the match, FAU rallied behind the serving of Jeana Boyle to score five in a row. The Bulldogs fought back to tie it at 16 and the teams traded points until FAU took control at 26. The Owl's strong blocking helped them to finish out the game at 30-27.

The aggressive serving of Gonzaga broke down the FAU offense as the Owls hit -.079 in game two. But a late four-point rally gave the momentum back to FAU as the match moved into game three.

Lindsey Bell started on the left side in game three and made an immediate impact as she picked up two block assists and hit .500 in the game. The other outside hitter, Abby Miner (Largo, FL) picked up seven of her match-high 20 kills in the third game.

Florida Atlantic never led in the fourth game as the match moved into the deciding fifth game. Again, the Owls fell behind early but were able to tie it at 14 to keep the match alive. The go-to player became Abby Miner as she picked up three kills to tie the match in the last seven points. Miner has a team-leading 92 kills this season. But Gonzaga won the seesaw battle after FAU committed a service and attacking error.

FAU will take on host Montana State tonight at 7:30 pm Mountain Time in the final match of the tournament. The Bobcats fell in their first match of the day to Eastern Michigan 3-0.
