Volleyball Earns First Win

Sept. 6, 2003

Final Stats

In the second day of action at the DoubleTree Boca Bash, Florida Atlantic University's volleyball team picked up its first win of the season with a 3-0 decision over The Citadel. Abby Miner led the squad with her third double-double of the season as he posted a match-high 14 kills and 11 digs in FAU's 30-27, 30-15, 30-16 victory.

Game one saw FAU (1-4) take an early 16-9 lead against the Bulldogs before they went on a 14-7 run to tie the game at 23. Freshman outside hitter, Janelle Sarauw (St. Thomas, V.I.) connected on one of her career-high nine kills to break the tie and give the Owls the lead for good at 24-23.

The Bulldogs (0-5) were dominated at the net after being out-hit.353-.172 by FAU in game two. FAU took control of the game at 5-5. The Owls rolled off seven straight points behind the serving of Lauren McHugh (Lighthouse Point, FL). McHugh recorded two of her career-high six aces in the run before The Citadel could find an answer for the sophomore defensive specialist.

The Bulldogs tried to extend the match as they took a 15-10 lead in game three. Florida Atlantic battled back to tie the game at 26 and McHugh served two straight aces to give the Owls the advantage they needed to pull out their first victory of the season.

Jeana Boyle (Boca Raton, FL) dished out 43 assists, while her counterpart Desiree Browning finished with 25 for the Bulldogs.

The two teams will play a second match this afternoon. The Citadel will face USF at 5 pm, while FAU will return for a 7 pm match up with Maryland.
