Aug. 30, 2008

Final Stats

BOCA RATON, FL - The Florida Atlantic University volleyball team split its two matches on the second day of the FAU Invitational on Saturday.

The Owls defeated North Florida in four sets in their first game of the day. The Owls fell behind UNF 14-8 in set one and were eventually able to close within two points at 24-22, but a Danielle Lerch kill gave the Ospreys the set one win. FAU trailed 7-4 early on in set two before going on a 9-3 run to take a 13-10 lead. The lead rose to five at 23-18, and UNF rallied to a two-point deficit, before an Osprey attack error tied the match at a set apiece.

The two teams were engaged in a tug of war for most of the third set. Action was tied at 14 when FAU took five of the next six points to seize control on their way to a 25-18 triumph. UNF took an early 10-7 lead in the fourth set, before FAU rallied to tie the set at 11. A Kala Abdell (Royal Palm Beach, FL/Royal Palm Beach HS) serving run gave the Owls a 13-11 lead, and they were able hold UNF off, eventually winning the set 25-18 to clinch the match. Morgan Johns (Mobile, AL/St. Paul's HS) tied for the match-high with 12 kills.

In the nightcap, the Owls were swept by Northern Iowa, three sets to none. Morgan Johns, who had 39 kills in the tournament, was named to the All-Tournament Team, along with Krystena Castro (Nanuet, NY/ Clarkstown South HS). FAU now stands at 2-1 on the year. The Owls return to action next weekend when they participate in the UMKC Invitational.
