Women's Tennis Dominates Postseason Honors

May 14, 2003

BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University women's tennis team was justifiably rewarded for its dominant performance during Atlantic Sun Conference play by A-Sun coaches early last week. Alena Dvorakova was named A-Sun Player-of-the-Year, while head coach Caroline Wheelen was voted as Coach-of-the-Year. Meanwhile, Karolina Roubickova joined Dvorakova as a First-Team All-Conference performer, and Maria Aguirre-Gomez was voted to Second-Team All-Conference. The Lady Owls enjoyed their most successful season in program history, ending the year 19-6.

Dvorakova led the Lady Owls all season at no. 1. The sophomore from Prague Czech Republic went 20-1 at that position, and has won 20 consecutive singles matches.

Roubickova, also from Prague Czech Republic, was solid at no. 2 all season long. The junior finished 12-6 on the year, including an 11-3 record at no. 2. When combined, the Czech connection of Dvorakova and Roubickova, were just as strong. The duo went 15-4 together in doubles.

Aguirre-Gomez was second on the team in overall wins, finishing 18-5 on the year. The senior from Murcia, Spain was dominant in the A-Sun tournament, winning every match she played in.

For Wheelen, this year was her best season in her three-year stint at FAU. She currently stands 46-24 as head coach of the Lady Owls.
