Owls Fall to UM, 7-0
Jan. 27, 2006 Coral Gables, FL - Florida Atlantic University's women's tennis team opened its 2005-2006 campaign under the direction of FAU's first-year head coach Mary Dailey with a 7-0 loss to the University of Miami, ranked no. 10 nationally. "Halfway through the doubles matches today, we began to overcome fear and play better tennis," said Dailey. "After missing matches in the fall due to the hurricane, it was my first opportunity to see the individuals in match play. We now have a measuring stick and know where and how hard we need to work." FAU's 2005 campaign, which was highlighted by capturing an Atlantic Sun Conference Championship and advancing to the NCAA Tournament, ended at Miami. The 2006 march for a return trip to the NCAA began at Miami. It also marked the return of Dailey to South Florida collegiate tennis after earning All-America honors playing for the Canes. UM picked up its first point by sweeping doubles play and also earned each of the singles points, but not before FAU challenged Miami in two matches. Pia Terol grabbed a set from Ana Rupic at #6 singles while Elodie Wendling dropped her first set by a tiebreaker. The Owls will next travel to Macon, GA where they will face Mercer on Sunday.
