![]() Women's Tennis Outlasts SMU 4-3
March 28, 2003
BOCA RATON, FL- - Florida Atlantic University needed all nine matches to put away a pesky Southern Methodist University, 4-3, on Friday afternoon. The Lady Owls started fast by taking an early 3-1 lead but the Mustangs (11-7) fought back to tie the match at 3-3. Junior Tania Rivera wouldn't let the match slip away as she defeated Nadia Vaughan, 6-3, 6-4, at no. 4. Rivera's win gave FAU (14-4) its seventh consecutive victory and pushed her singles win streak to eight.
A possible indicator of how the match was to be determined could have been the fight for the doubles point. Alena Dvorakova and Karolina Roubickova earned an 8-4 win at no. 1. Meanwhile, SMU stole the win at no. 3 by the same score. At no. 2, Maria Aguirre-Gomez and Jessica Burrow clawed their way to a 9-8 victory giving the Lady Owls a hard earned 1-0 lead.
In singles, Dvorakova quickly blanked Kit Carson, 6-0, 6-0, at no. 1. Dvorakova has now won 15 consecutive singles matches. While at no. 5, Krystel Borg put Allison Leuszler away, 6-3, 6-0.
For the year, FAU has matched last season's win total of 14, with three matches remaining on its schedule.
