Women's Tennis Knocks off Defending A-Sun Champs

Feb. 27, 2003

BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University served the defending Atlantic Sun Conference champions, UCF, its first conference loss Wednesday afternoon. The Lady Owls have now won five consecutive, and stand 3-0 in the A-Sun, and 7-2 overall. Alena Dvorakova and Karolina Roubickova led the way as no. 72 FAU won 5-2. UCF falls to 4-3 and 2-1 in the A-Sun.

UCF came into the match short-handed, as only five girls were available for competition. This meant FAU would automatically win the no. 6 singles match by default, and needed to win just one doubles match to secure the doubles point. Dvorakova and Roubickova teamed to make certain FAU took the doubles point by quickly beating Julie Pecastaing and Anna Westin, 8-1, at no. 1.

With a 2-0 lead heading into singles match play, Dvorakova and Roubickova then shut the door on any potential comeback by the Golden Knights. Dvorakova coasted by Westin, 6-0, 6-1, at no. 1 and Roubickova dropped Pecastaing, 6-3, 6-0 at no. 2. The Lady Owls had victory in hand leading 4-0.
 

 

Sophomore Krystel Borg also won in singles accounting for the Lady Owls fifth point. The victory was Borg's fifth consecutive singles match win.

FAU will next take on no. 41 Virginia March 3rd at 3:00 pm.

4. Krystel Borg (FAU) def. Ola Luczak (UCF) 6-1, 4-6, 6-1.
5. Amira Samara (UCF) def. Stephanie Beaulieu (FAU) 6-4, 6-5.
6. Stephanie Oldock (FAU) won by default.

Doubles

1. Dvorakova/Roubickova (FAU) def. Pecastaing/Westin (UCF) 8-1.
2. Lohmos/Luczak (UCF) def. Burrow/Rivera (FAU) 8-6.
3. Beauliea/Borg (FAU) won by default.
