Mazzarella and Morin Honored

April 21, 2003

BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University's Pam Mazzarella and Amanda Morin have received weekly softball honors handed down by the Atlantic Sun Conference Monday afternoon. Mazzarella is sharing the A-Sun Player-of-the-Week award with Jacksonville State's Janae Bonin while Morin has been named A-Sun Pitcher-of-the-Week.

It's the second time this season Morin and Mazzarella have received such honors. It's the third time in her career Mazzarella has been named Player-of-the-Week.

Both players are coming off sensational weeks as they helped lead the Lady Owls to a perfect 5-0 record. FAU outscored its opponents 35-5 while batting .409 as a team last week, and Mazzarella was a big reason why. The sophomore from Brookfield, CT, batted .588 (10-for-17) with two home runs and nine RBIs. She had at least two hits in four of her five starts and went 5-for-5 in FAU's doubleheader sweep of Belmont on Saturday with a homer and six RBIs. She raised her batting average 30 points to a team-leading .323.

Morin was equally impressive in the circle. The freshman from Gansevoort, NY, won all three of her starts and posted a 0.74 ERA in 19 innings of work. She allowed just two earned runs on 14 hits and struck out 23 with no walks. Morin came within two outs of a perfect game in a 10-0 win over Belmont on Saturday. In all, she has won her last seven decisions and is tied for the team high in wins (15).

Florida Atlantic has won a season-high six consecutive games and is in first place in the A-Sun. Overall, the Lady Owls have a 32-24 record and are 13-3 in the A-Sun. Since March 20, FAU has posted a 19-6 record.

The Lady Owls have just six games remaining in the regular season. They next face Stetson Tuesday night in a 4:00pm doubleheader at FAU Field. The season closes out next weekend with a Saturday doubleheader at Central Florida and a Sunday doubleheader at home against Jacksonville State.
