![]() Myers and Matthews Sweep A-Sun Honors
April 9, 2002
Florida Atlantic University's Nikki Myers and Ginny Matthews swept this week's Atlantic Sun Conference weekly softball awards. Myers was named the A-Sun Pitcher-of-the-Week for the fourth time this year while Matthews collected the conference's Player-of-the-Week award for the second time. Myers, a senior, went 3-0 on the week while throwing her ninth career no-hitter. She allowed just one earned run in just over 16 innings of work. Her eight strikeouts in a victory over Troy State on Sunday gave her 300 for the season. It's the third straight year she has accomplished that feat. At 25-4 on the year, Myers needs just three wins to reach 100 for her career. Last week at the plate, she also connected for her 50th career homer. In addition, Myers was named as a finalist for the USA Softball Collegiate Player-of-the-Year award. Matthews, a sophomore, went 10-of-15 from the plate with six RBIs and a homer to help lead FAU to a perfect 5-0 record for the week. In the process, she raised her batting average 43 points to .323 on the year which is good for third on the team. Matthews is the only Lady Owl to have started all 51 games this season. Florida Atlantic, ranked no. 11 nationally, is tied for first place in the A-Sun with a 7-1 record and is 44-7 overall. The team next faces Samford on Thursday in a doubleheader in Birmingham, AL. The road trip continues with a Friday doubleheader at Jacksonville State followed by a twin-bill Sunday at Belmont.
