March 17, 2003
BOCA RATON, FL -- Florida Atlantic University's Callie Piper has been named the Atlantic Sun Conference Softball Player-of-the-Week, announced the conference office Monday afternoon. Piper is coming off her best week of the season in which she batted 12-for-22 (.545) in eight games. The junior catcher from Wichita, KS, went an impressive 8-for-9 (.889) in FAU's four games at the FIU Blue and Gold Classic. That included games against no. 7 California, no. 20 Texas A&M, and no. 24 Massachusetts. Piper leads FAU with a .337 batting average and currently owns a seven-game hitting streak. She has hit safely in her past six at-bats and is 10-for-13 (.769) over her past five games. The honor marks the second time Piper has been named A-Sun Player-of-the-Week. She also received the award March 4, 2002. It's the second time this year a Lady Owl has been so recognized. Pam Mazzarella was named POTW on February 10. Florida Atlantic (13-18) next hosts the FAU "Parents' Weekend" Invitational beginning March 20 and running through March 22. FAU faces Manhattan March 20 at 4:00pm before taking on Liberty at 6:00pm.
