Softball Defeats FIU

April 21, 2002

Final Stats

BOCA RATON, FL - Callie Piper drove in the only run for Florida Atlantic University in a 1-0 victory over visiting Florida International University Sunday afternoon in Boca Raton, FL. Piper's successful squeeze bunt in the fifth proved to be the difference as FAU improved to 52-8 on the year.

The game was scoreless through four innings before FAU manufactured its run in the fifth. With one out, Heather Wright walked and advanced to second on a walk to Nikki Myers. After a wild pitch advanced the runners, Pam Mazzarella walked to lad the bases with still only one out. That set the stage for Piper's bunt that scored Wright.

Myers (30-4) dominated for FAU on the mound, allowing just three hits, both in the fourth, while striking out seven. With the win, Myers becomes just the second 30-game winner in FAU history and extends her personal winning streak to 11 straight decisions. She needs one win to break Liz Niadna's single-season record of 30 wins in 1998.

Kendra Laminack (8-7) suffered the loss for FIU (35-26).

Florida Atlantic next faces Stetson in a Tuesday night doubleheader in DeLand, FL to close out its Atlantic Sun Conference regular season. The Lady Owls are currently in first place in the A-Sun with a 14-2 record.
