Softball Posts Two Shutouts

FAU 8, Manhattan 0 (Box Score and Play-by-Play)

BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University continued its dominance at the FAU "Parents' Weekend" Invitational on Friday. The Lady Owls defeated both Liberty University and Manhattan College to extend their winning streak to four games. FAU (17-18) defeated Liberty, 1-0 in eight innings, and then cruised past Manhattan, 5-0 in five innings. FAU has now posted four consecutive shutouts.

The day featured the first collegiate win by Pam Mazzarella, who threw a two-hit shutout against Manhattan. The sophomore, who typically plays first base, started just her fourth career game in the circle. She walked one and struck out one and improved her record to 1-2.
 

 

Against Liberty, Ginny Matthews provided the late-inning heroics with a one-out single in the bottom of the eighth that scored Jaime Melton with the game's only run. FAU outhit Liberty, 4-3, in scattering just four singles. Amanda Morin (8-10) picked up her fourth shutout of the season, and second in as many days, as she allowed just three hits and struck out four.

Against Manhattan, FAU scored twice in the second and six times in the third en route to the five inning win. Callie Piper, Amy Bellisari, and Lauren Evans each had two hits in the win. Bellisari had two RBIs while Ebony Gray, Jenn Piazza, Jennifer Cavanaugh, Alanna Sachs, and Evans also drove in a run each.

In Friday's other game, Manhattan shut out Liberty, 5-0. Florida Atlantic concludes play at the weekend tournament on Saturday. FAU will face Liberty at noon and Manhattan at 4:00pm. The 2:00pm game features Libverty vs Manhattan.
