Owls Extend Win Streak To Eight With Sweep

March 15, 2005

Box Score

BOCA RATON - The Florida Atlantic University softball team extended its season-best win streak to eight games Tuesday night with two victories over visiting Quinnipiac. The Owls (16-19) got a complete-game, four-hit, 12-strike out effort from senior Candice Freel in a 2-1 game one victory and had a six-run fourth inning to thank for an 8-0 mercy-rule victory in game two. Senior Jessica Braggins was 3-for-3 with two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored on the night, and senior Jenn Piazza had three RBI in support of game two starter, sophomore Meghan Doonan, who struck out 10 in five innings. FAU have now won 10 of their last 12 contests.

Single runs in both the third and fourth innings were all FAU and Freel needed in game one of the doubleheader. A Braggins RBI single and a Jenna Lopez sac fly, the first of her collegiate career, accounted for the Owls scoring.

In game two, FAU held a 2-0 lead going into the bottom of the fourth but extended their lead to eight with six runs in the stanza, two of them unearned. Along with Piazza's three RBI, seniors Braggins, Danielle Arriaga and Pam Mazzarella, as well as junior Jennifer Cavanaugh all drove in runs of their own in the game.

FAU return to action on Friday afternoon when they host No. 14 Texas A&M in the Owls' opening game of the FAU Parents Weekend Tournment. Other teams playing in the six-team, three-day event are Florida International, Michigan State, Tulsa and Wisconsin.

Tickets for the tournament will be available on a per-day and entire tournament basis. Daily tickets are $10 for adults and $7 for youth/seniors while the tournament pass, which will only be sold on Friday, is $25 for adults and $18 for youth/seniors. Tickets can be purchased in advance by calling 1-866-FAU-OWLS, or at the gate. For those unable to attend, live statistics from all games will be available on www.fausports.com.
