Feb. 13, 2001

Box Score

Miami, FL -

,Florida Atlantic University's softball team (2-4) lost a doubleheader to Florida International University (10-1), Thursday night. The Lady Owls fell in the first game 3-2 after eight innings, and the second game 4-2.

In the first game, the Lady Owls were led offensively by Kristen Stanley, 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Diane Sanchez, who was 1-for-4 with an RBI double to tie the game up in the sixth inning.

Kristie Picon, who started the game for FAU, pitched six complete innings. She was removed following a FIU bunt single. In an attempt to force the game into extra innings FAU elected to replace Picon with All-American Candidate Nicole Myers. Myers retire the side. The junior returned in the bottom of the eighth, to retire the first two batters on strike outs. With two outs, Leslie Gillen hit a single to right and capitalized on two FAU errors to score the only run which mattered. Myers took the loss and returned to the mound for the nightcap, where she took another loss to fall to 2-3 overall, after posting nine strikouts.

In the second game of the doubleheader, the Lady Owls jumped to quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Michelle Shirah hit a two-run single to left, driving in Ninya Ybarra, who was 2-for-4 for the game, and Nicole Myers, who had a double. Michelle Shirah earned the team's only two RBIs, both in the first.

The Lady Owls will face Hofstra University, 6 pm, Thursday, February 22, 2001 in the team's home-season opener.
