Women's Soccer Sweeps A-Sun Honors

Oct. 4, 2004

Macon, GA - Florida Atlantic University forward Denise Brolly and defender Janine Aylward were named the Atlantic Sun Women's Soccer Players-of-the-Week by the conference office on Monday afternoon. Brolly registered seven goals in three games while Aylward anchored a defense that allowed just five shots in three games as the Lady Owls went 3-0 for the week. FAU has swept Player-of-the-Week honors a program and conference record four times.

"I think both of these girls helped give our team a jump start this week," said head coach Brian Dooley. "We entered the week at .500 but with their help and the help of the entire team, we have our longest winning streak of the season which helps with our overall confidence."

Brolly, a junior from Coatbridge, Scotland, was named the A-Sun Offensive Player-of-the-Week for the first time in her career after scoring seven goals and adding two assists. She finished the week with 16 points, scoring goals in all three games. Brolly opened the week scoring one goal in a 2-0 win over Florida International. She scored two goals with two assists in the 8-0 win over Belmont and tied a program record by scoring four goals in a 6-0 win over Lipscomb. She scored seven goals on 14 shots while averaging 5.33 points per game. Brolly leads the team with nine goals and 22 points and is tied for second in points and third in goals in the A-Sun.

"I couldn't have scored any goals without the excellent play of my teammates," said Brolly, the first Lady Owl to earn Offensive Player-of-the-Week honors since November 4, 2002. "Right now our team is clicking offensively and I have been fortunate to be in the right place at the right time."

Aylward, a senior from Levittown, N.Y., earned her first A-Sun Defensive Player-of-the-Week honor by leading FAU to three consecutive shutout victories. She becomes just the third defender in program history and fourth overall to earn Defensive Player-of-the-Week honors. In addition to her defensive prowess, Aylward added a pair of assists on the week. She recorded the game-winning assist in the 2-0 win over FIU and added another against Belmont, moving her into second place all-time at FAU for assists. Aylward led an FAU defensive unit that held Lipscomb without a shot, only the third time in program history the team has held their opponent without a shot, as the Owls allowed an average of 1.67 shots per game for the week.

"Right now, defensively, we are playing extremely well," said Aylward. "We're playing with a lot of confidence and hopefully we'll be able to duplicate our performance against our upcoming conference opponents."

Florida Atlantic returns to action on Friday, October 8, against Georgia State in Atlanta, GA.
