Sept. 30, 2002 Macon, Ga. - Florida Atlantic University swept the Atlantic Sun Women's Soccer Player-of-the-Week awards as Julie Ferguson and Molly Keating were honored by the league office on Monday. Ferguson and Keating led the Lady Owls to their fourth straight win as the teammates swept the A-Sun weekly honors for the first time this season and for the first time in the conference since October 30, 2000. This is the second time FAU has won both awards the same week.
Freshman Julie Ferguson, from Glasgow, Scotland, scored two-game winning goals in two games to lead FAU to a pair of A-Sun victories over the weekend. Both game-winning goals came in the waning moments of the match. On Friday against Campbell, Ferguson headed in the goal in the 88th minute off of a long pass from midfield to lead FAU to a 1-0 win. On Sunday, she rallied the team back from a 1-0 deficit and scored the game-winner in the 82nd minute of play to guide the Lady Owls to a 2-1 win over Georgia State. Through her first seven matches, Ferguson has tallied at least one point in each match and is averaging a point per game.
"I'm very surprised, shocked and honored, it shows that I'm doing something right," said Ferguson. "I've been working hard to get into the starting 11 and I'm happy that this work is paying off." Junior goalkeeper Molly Keating handled the defensive duty, earning the A-Sun Defensive-Player-of-the-Week award. The Inverness, Fla. native recorded her third shutout of the season and 15th of her career in the 1-0 win over Campbell Friday night as she saved six shots on goal. On Sunday, Keating allowed an opening goal to Georgia State then held the Lady Panthers scoreless over the remaining 80 minutes as she saved three shots to preserve the win. Keating lowered her goals against average on the season to 1.55 after allowing just one goal in 180 minutes in net over the past week. "It's a great honor," said Keating, "it wasn't just me though, it was the whole team in front of me. If it weren't for the whole team defending all the way to the forwards there is no way I could have gotten it. I'm the last line and I'm just doing my job." Florida Atlantic improved to 5-3 overall and 2-1 in the conference. The Lady Owls return to action on Friday when they host Belmont in an Atlantic Sun match. ### |
