Women's Soccer Falls in A-Sun Title Match

Nov. 10, 2001

ORLANDO, FL - Florida Atlantic University fell 2-1 in the title match of the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship to the University of Central Florida Saturday evening in Orlando, FL. The loss drops FAU to 14-5-1 and ends the team's record 10-match winning streak. UCF improved to 14-5 and earned the conference's autmatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. FAU will await a possible at-large bid.

FAU was credited with the first goal of the match on an own goal 45 seconds into the second half. The Lady Owls had two more strong chances in the following five minutes of play but could not capitalize.

"The odds were against us," said FAU head coach Brian Dooley. "What this conference expects, playing three games in three days, is something no elite athlete is expected to do. It is physical, emotional, and psychological. Despite all that, the team played through it all. They played to the last whistle."

FAU held the lead through much of the second half before Lindsey Mier evened the match for the Knights. With less than 12 minutes to play, Michelle Henderson scored the game-winner.

Much like a year ago, FAU fell by one goal in the A-Sun Tournament Championship. The Lady Owls had one more late chance to tie the match on a Daniele Castro shot that hit the inside of the goal post and took a crazy angle away from the goal.

"In all my years of coaching, I have never seen a ball hit the inside and come out like that," said Dooley.

FAU out shot UCF 13-11 and saw Molly Keating earn four saves to UCF's three.
