Denver Captures Sun Belt Conference Tournament Title with 1-0 Victory Over Arkansas-Little Rock

Nov. 7, 2009

The University of Denver won its fourth straight Sun Belt Conference Championship title with a 1-0 victory over Arkansas-Little Rock on Saturday afternoon at the FAU Soccer Stadium.

The two-seed Pioneers grabbed the lead in the 20th minute off a header from inside the attacking box by Jessica Rogers. The scoring opportunity was set up off a right corner kick by Mariah Johnston.

Denver made that score hold up over the last 70 minutes of action despite some scoring opportunities by the tournament's eight seeded Trojans.

The Pioneers held a slim 12-11 advantage in shots and a 5-4 edge on shots on goal. Denver receives the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division I tournament.

Freshman forward Kaitlin Bast was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.

A total of 1,072 fans attended the seven matches over the course of the three days.
