FAU Shutout Stetson, 5-0

Nov. 2, 2000

BOCA RATON, FL -

Florida Atlantic University (13-5) scored five second half goals to rout Stetson University, 5-0, Thursday night in first round action at the Trans America Athletic Conference Championship in Boca Raton, FL. Jessica Kmiotek scored two goals in the effort.

Defense highlighted the first half as third-seed FAU and six-seed Stetson (7-11-1) combined for just three shots in the scoreless frame. FAU's Lisanne Peart put the Lady Owls on the board 3:47 into the second half with her team-leading 15th goal to put FAU on top 1-0.

Ten minutes later it was Lena Andersson scoring her first goal of the season to give FAU a 2-0 lead. Just 3:43 later, Lauren Lucena increased the FAU advantage to 3-0 with her seventh goal of the season.

The FAU barrage continued at 64:23 when Kmitoek connected. FAU completed its scoring at 73:07 when Kmiotek scored once again.

"You could see the nervousness on both teams," said FAU head coach Brian Dooley on the scoreless first half. "We were playing like we were afraid to lose. The only thing we talked about at halftime was getting into a rhythm, combining, and making the assist, not the goal. Once we started thinking that way, it just opened up the offense."

The victory was FAU's first in TAAC Championship play. They will next play two-seed Central Florida Friday at 7:00pm. The match will follow the other semifinal featuring fifth-seed Georgia State versus top-seed Jacksonville at 4:00pm.
