Final Stats

Amy Jackson`s goal with seven minutes remaining in the second half gave the Florida International University women's soccer team a slim 1-0 victory over Florida Atlantic University on Friday night in Miami. The loss ended the Owls regular season and means that the squad failed to qualify for the conference's championship tournament, being played next week in Boca Raton.

FAU finished the fall campaign with a 5-12-3 overall record and a 3-7-1 mark in Sun Belt Conference (SBC) matches. Meanwhile, FIU won the league's regular season title with a 9-1-1 conference record while being 11-5-3 record for the season.

The scoring opportunity came on a left corner kick by Marina Pappas that was finished on a header.

The host Panthers had many chances to score in the first half with Thaisa Moreno having a one-and-one situation against FAU goalkeeper Ashley Lantes after breaking through the Owls' defense. However, Lantes made a lunging save to deflect Moreno's shot off the right post. The freshman from Clermont, Fla., made nine saves in the losing effort for FAU.

FAU's best scoring chance came in the 60th minute of the match when a header inside the five-yard box by freshman Brianna Kelts, off a free kick by junior Janelle Blake, was saved by the Panthers' goalkeeper.

Anhnhi Tran paced a balanced offensive attack with two shots. Meghan Brown, Laura Hyvonen, Alanna Jordan, Brianna Kelts, and Breanna Lewis all recorded a shot for FAU.

The Owls held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks but were outshot 12-7 by FIU.

The Sun Belt Conference's championship tournament begins on Wednesday, November 4, and continues through Saturday, November 7, at the FAU Soccer Stadium. The tournament winner advances to represent the league in the NCAA Division I tournament. This is the first conference tournament that FAU has hosted since joining the SBC.
