FAU Sweeps Louisiana Schools, Winning 2-1 Sunday

Oct. 12, 2008

Final Stats

LAFAYETTE, LA - Florida Atlantic University completed its two-match Sun Belt Conference road swing through Louisiana with a sweep - knocking off the University of Louisiana-Lafayette 2-1 Sunday afternoon. The Owls were fresh off scoring a season-high four times and putting nine shots on goal en route to a 4-3 victory over the University of Louisiana-Monroe Friday.

FAU (3-8-1, 2-3-1 Sun Belt) finds itself playing its best soccer of the year, winning two crucial conference matches to put the school in position to qualify for the eight-team Sun Belt Conference postseason tournament, which takes place November 5-8 in Denton, Texas.

The Owls handed Louisiana-Lafayette (4-8-2, 2-3-1 Sun Belt) its first loss in four matches. Both teams have five games remaining on its regular-season schedule.

Sunday's game was scoreless until the waning minutes of the first half when a free ball found the foot of Gabriela DeVries; who touched it once before letting a shot go from 25 yards out and sailing it past UL keeper Stephanie Weston - giving the Owls a 1-0 lead at the break.

The Cajuns tied the game in the 59th minute when UL was awarded a penalty kick. Junior Courtney Hofland converted the penalty, scoring on the free kick. With the goal Hofland is now UL's all-time leading goal scorer with 13 for her career.

FAU tallied their second goal of the game when Sonia Richards found teammate Ashley Mannarino, who put the ball in the back of the net in the 80th minute.

The match featured four yellow cards.

FAU returns to action with a pair of matches this weekend. The Owls face Troy at 7 p.m. ET Friday night and the University of South Alabama Sunday at 12 p.m. ET.
