FAU downs Samford 2-1 in Atlantic Sun play

Birmingham, Ala - ,Birmingham, AL Florida Atlantic Women's Soccer Team used goals from sophomore forward Lauren Lucena and freshmen forward Brandi Herrmann as the Lady Owls defeated Samford, 2-1 in a key Atlantic Sun conference game.

The Lady Owls opened the scoring in the 16th minute of the game. Samford goalkeeper Carrie Ollom deflected Lauren Lucena's first shot. Lucena got the ball right back and fired a shot into the net to give FAU a 1-0 lead, which held up until halftime. The goal was Lucena's fourth on the season and third in the last two games.

FAU scored the first goal in the second half. Janine Aylward sent a corner kick into the box. The kick was knocked down and Brandi Herrmann knocked it into the net for her first goal of the season and gave FAU a 2-0 lead. The goal was scored in the 57th minute and was assisted by Aylward, her second of the season.
 

 

Samford battled back and cut the FAU lead in half when freshman Keala Ryan scored in the 69th minute, on a shot from 20 yards out that went over the head of FAU sophomore goalkeeper Molly Keating.

The Lady Owls kept Samford from scoring in the final 21 minutes to hang on for the win. FAU outshot Samford 12 to 5 for the match.

With the win FAU moves to 7-4-1 overall and 3-2-1 in A-Sun conference play. Samford falls to 6-6-1 overall and 3-2-1 in conference play.

FAU is away again on Saturday, October 13. The Lady Owls play at Jacksonville State, 2pm, in another key A-Sun conference game.
