Two Late Goals Give Women's Soccer the Victory over GSU 2-1

Sept. 28, 2002

Final Stats

Atlanta, Ga. - Florida Atlantic concluded a two game road trip with a 2-1 victory over conference rival Georgia State University on the late scoring surge of Rhonda Jones and Julie Ferguson. Ferguson scored her second game-winning goal in two days as the Lady Owls have won three games a row and four of their last five.

Georgia State (3-5-2, 1-2-1), coming off playing two straight over-time games, scored early in the game when Ashley Edwards received a pass from Haley Mitchum and put the ball past FAU keeper Molly Keating to take a 1-0 lead.

Florida Atlantic (5-3, 2-1) started the second half attacking and defending very aggressive. The Lady Owl defense allowed only two shots on goal the second period as FAU out shot the Lady Panthers 8-2. The offensive pressure paid off in the 80th minute when Jones took a pass from Danielle Castro off of a free kick in the box and knocked in her first goal of the season to tie the score at 1-1.

Two minutes later, Danielle Castro set up the game-winning goal when she served a corner kick into the box to Ferguson, who ripped her shot past GSU keeper Kallen Forster for her second goal and second game-winning goal of the season. Thursday night Ferguson scored in the 88th minute to push FAU past conference foe Campbell University.

The Owls received solid play from Keating in goal as the junior from Inverness, Fla., saved three shots and allowed only one goal. FAU out shot GSU 12-6 and were tied in corner kicks 5-5.

Florida Atlantic returns home to play it's third conference game in a row against Belmont University, October 4th at 7:00 pm at FAU Field.
