Women's Soccer Falls to Campbell in OT

Sept. 23, 2004

Box Score

Buies Creek, N.C. - Florida Atlantic University's women's soccer team fell behind early once again and could not come back as the Lady Owls lost 3-2 in overtime to Campbell University on Thursday night. Michele Fazzari scored her first career goal and Alicia Tirelli recorded her first career assist in FAU's fourth overtime match in seven contests. FAU falls to 2-3-2 overall and 0-2-0 in the Atlantic Sun.

"This was a really tough game to lose because we played one of our better games this year," said head coach Brian Dooley. "It is really disconcerting though that we again gave up a goal in the first six minutes of the game. The game [of soccer] is really testing us right now but if we make the proper adjustments then we will continue to get better."

For the third time in four games, FAU allowed their opponent to score in the first six minutes of the game. Campbell (3-1-3, 1-0-0) scored on its first shot as Tracy Taddonio scored at 6:10 from 18-yards out to give the Camels the lead.

Campbell held the lead until the 67th minute when Susanna Lehtinen scored her second goal of the season. Lehtinen re-directed Janine Aylward's shot off of Denise Brolly's corner kick, tying the score 1-1.

The Camels took the lead when Danielle Mandella scored with less than eight minutes remaining. FAU responded almost immediately. Tirelli made her way through midfield and lofted a pass towards the offensive zone. Fazzari leaped over the Campbell defense, trapped the ball and fired a shot towards the upper left corner for her first game-tying goal.

Cadian Lawrence scored the game winning goal six minutes into overtime to extend Campbell's unbeaten streak to four games. FAU outshot the Camels 14-4 and led in corner kicks 9-0. Megan Coyne recorded one save. Campbell increased its all-time series lead to 6-4.

Florida Atlantic returns to action Saturday, September 25 at 1 pm against Gardner-Webb University.
