Women's Soccer Drops Another to UCF

Sept. 16, 2004

Orlando, FL - For the second time in two games Florida Atlantic University's women' soccer team allowed its opponent to score in the first five minutes of the game. This time though, the Lady Owls could not recover as they were shutout by the University of Central Florida 3-0 on Thursday night in the team's first Atlantic Sun Conference game. FAU falls to 2-2-1 overall and 0-1-0 in A-Sun play.

"This was a tough game," said head coach Brian Dooley. "We gave up an early goal again and from there we couldn't convert on opportunities that were given to us. This game really shows where we need to get as a team. We need to put this game behind us and focus our goals on the remaining conference schedule and the conference tournament."

Just over three minutes into the match, UCF midfielder Allison Blagriff scored when she collected an errant ball to the left of Lady Owl goalkeeper Megan Coyne and knocked it into the net. The Golden Knights (6-1-1) went up 2-0 at 18:09. Jessalyn Withers served a corner kick from the right side to teammate Shannon Wing, who used a well-placed header to score.

Keeping the pressure on in the first half, FAU recorded five corner kicks in the first 15 minutes, but couldn't convert on their chances. UCF, though, extended their lead by three when Courtney Baines pushed the ball to freshman Kendra Flock, who streaked in and scored high to the left side.

FAU led 5-2 in corner kicks for the game. Coyne recorded five saves in the loss as UCF outshot FAU 15-8. Katri Nokso-Koivisto led the Lady Owls with two shots.

Florida Atlantic returns to action Saturday, September 18 at 4 pm when the team travels to Tampa, FL to play against the University of South Florida.
