Women Soccer opens with a 2-0 victory

Aug. 31, 2001

BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University's women's soccer team (1-0) opened the 2001 season with a victory and a shutout against Georgia Southern University (0-1).

FAU Head Coach Brian Dooley acknowledged that it was a tough, gritty game. "We played the situations as they came to us. Their possession game allowed us to organize our defense." Coach Dooley also felt that the game was a good opportunity for the young players to come through and gain some valuable experience.

Daniello Casto connected on a free kick at 55:51 to put the Lady Owls on the board. FAU's Autumn Baur scored from 18 yards out with just over 10 minutes to play to give the Owls a little more breathing room.

Georgia Southern out shot FAU 10-7, but strong keeper play from sophomore keeper Molly Keating, who tallied six saves, gave FAU the victory. Kari Gast had three saves for the Eagles.

Wofford, which FAU will play 2 pm, Sunday, defeated LeHigh in an earlier match 3-1. LeHigh will face Georgia Southern, noon, Sunday.
