FAU Alum Carafiello and LeBrun Finish Qualifiers

BOCA RATON, Fla. (December 8, 2008) - FAU alum Jessica Carafiello finished play at the LPGA Qualifying School on Sunday, December 7 at the LPGA International Course in Daytona Beach, Florida. Carafiello made the final cut of 70 to earn the chance to play in the final round on Sunday. Carafiello started the final round in 58th place with a one over score, but finished tied for 44th after hitting even for the day.

Steve LeBrun, also an FAU alum, completed his competition at the PGA Qualifying School in La Quinta, California on Monday, Decmber 8. On Sunday LeBrun shot four birdies that supported a 69 score, or three under par. LeBrun finished his last round on Monday with another strong outing with a three under par. The performance moved LeBrun up to a tie for 60th. Both Carafiello and LeBrun were attempting to earn their LPGA and PGA cards, which required a top 20 placing.

(December 7, 2008)- Update: FAU alums Jessica Carafiello and Steve LeBrun continued their quest to make the LPGA and PGA tours. Carafiello shot two over par on Saturday, moving her into 58th place. It was the fourth of five rounds. The final round will be played Sunday, December 7th.

LeBrun has shot even or under par in three of his first four rounds, including Saturday's one under. LeBrun's fourth round included two birdies. After play on Saturday LeBrun sat tied for 95th, but through the first four holes on Sunday morning LeBrun has played well enough to move 15 positions. LeBrun will finish play on Monday, December 8th.

Florida Atlantic University alums Steve LeBrun and Jessica Carafiello are competing at the PGA and LPGA qualifying schools this week.

LeBrun is competing in La Quinta, California on the Nicklaus Tournament Course and TPC Stadium Course. LeBrun will play seven rounds from Wednesday, December 3 through Monday, December 8. Currently LeBrun is tied for 78th place after three rounds. In the first round LeBrun shot six under par 66 strokes, followed by one over par with 73 and the third round hit even par 72. The PGA qualifying tournament can be seen live on the Golf Channel this weekend. LeBrun is a member of the 2008 Hall Of Fame Class.

Jessica Carafiello is competing in Daytona Beach, Florida on the LPGA International, Champions and Legends courses. The LPGA tournament qualifier is from Monday, December 1 through Sunday, December 7 with five rounds of golf played. Through the first round Carafiello shot a one over 73 and stood in 52nd place, but followed with a strong second round of 69. Her third round was over par 72. Through three rounds of golf, Carafiello is tied for 31st and is one stroke under par. The fourth round of golf will be played tomorrow, Saturday, with the final round on Sunday. The top twenty golfers gain LPGA status.
