April 4, 2003

Miami, FL. - The women's golf team of Florida Atlantic University showed the colleges and universities of the state of Florida who's in charge with an opening round 311 to finish second in the Ryder Florida Women's College Championships hosted by the University of Miami at Don Shula's Golf Resort. Jessica Carafiello shot two-over par on the par 72, 6317-yard course with Natalia Navarro and Amanda Pettit both tying for 14th going into the second round.

Carafiello, a sophomore from Coral Springs, FL, had her best opening round of the spring as she shot a tournament low 36 on the front nine and 38 on the back to finish in a tie for second place. She is only two shots back from the leader. Navarro opened the front nine with a score of 40 but settled down to fire a 38 on the back to go six-over par. Pettit, a transfer from the University of New Orleans, shot her second lowest round of the spring and had her best first day finish with identical front and back nine scores of 39. Both Heidi von Korff and Kendall Kirby improved from the front and the back to shoot 81's. This tournament marks the third time in the spring that three Lady Owls have finished the first round in the top-15.

Only Florida State University (298) played better than FAU but the Lady Owls will have to watch out as Rollins College (312), Jacksonville University (314) and the University of Central Florida (315) are right on their heals. Fellow Atlantic Sun Conference member Stetson (346) finished 13th while host Miami (319) finished seventh in the 14 school all-Florida competition.

The Lady Owls will continue play in the second round on Saturday, April 5th.
