FAU Women's Basketball Looking for First Sun Belt Win

Jan. 22, 2008

Coach Dugan Interview: Weekly Preview

The Florida Atlantic University women's basketball team is still searching for a Sun Belt conference win. They'll face two opponents this week with the hope of getting that win.

FAU will face Denver on Thursday. The contest has been moved to Lynn University Gymnasium due to the Republican national debate and will be played as a doubleheader with the men's game; tip-off is at 5:30 p.m. Due to the relocation, tickets for the game are available for just five dollars by calling 1-866-FAU-OWLS. The Pioneers won their first conference game last Thursday with a 57-46 win over Arkansas State and are currently 6-11, 1-6 in the Sun Belt. They have a balanced attack, led by junior forward Nnenna Akotaobi, who leads the team in scoring with 12.4 points per game. FAU will counter with the 1-2 punch of Carla Stubbs and freshman Jaimie Givens. Givens had two good games last week, highlighted by a 19 point, nine rebound effort against North Texas last Saturday.

The Owls travel to face the University of Arkansas-Little Rock at 3 p.m. on Sunday. The Trojans come into the week tied for the lead in the West Division of the Sun Belt at 5-2. They are led by forward Nikya Hughes, who leads the team in scoring at just under 15 points per game. Hughes was named Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week for averaging 23.5 points per game in Arkansas-Little Rock's wins over University of Louisiana at Monroe and South Alabama. Sunday's game can be heard on www.fausports.com by going to the women's basketball schedule page.
