Lady Owls Fall in Final Seconds

Dec. 4, 2004

Final Stats

Florida Atlantic University could not hold on to a one point lead with 18 seconds remaining as Belmont University defeated the Owls for the first time since 2002 at FAU Gym Saturday afternoon. The Bruins took a 76-75 victory to improve to 4-2, 1-1 A-Sun.

Florida Atlantic took its first lead of the second half with 12:01 remaining at 57-56. The Bruins controlled the scoreboard for most of the game and held the lead since claiming an 8-6 advantage.

The Owls managed to increase their lead to six twice in the remaining minutes before Belmont tied the contest at 73 on the first of two free throws by Tonisha Jones. Jones would give the Bruins the lead back when she made the second with 1:28 left in the game. Jones finished the afternoon with 10 points. Three other Bruins finished with double-digit points including Brandi Miller, Brooke Sunday and Hollie Davis. Miller finished with a double-double after collecting 12 rebounds.

FAU's high scorer Jackie Brown pushed the Owls ahead 75-74 with just 18 seconds remaining but the Bruins pushed the ball down the floor and got three opportunities to win the game as Miller and Jones both missed shots before Miller pulled down a rebound and laid up the winning basketball with only 14 seconds remaining.

Shuteamia Brayboy had the opportunity to tie the game but missed two free throws with only seconds remaining as FAU falls to 1-5, 0-2 A-Sun.

Davis led the Bruins with 28 points, while Brown paced the Owls with 13 points and six rebounds.

Amanda Bulin had a big second half for FAU as she posted nine of her 11 points and added three blocks in 18 second half minutes.

The Owls will face in-state rival Florida International next Saturday in Miami. The Golden Panthers hold a seven-game win streak over the Owls.
