Boyland's Jumper Sinks JSU

Dec. 3, 2001

Final Stats

BOCA RATON, FL-- A jumper by Crystal Boyland with seven seconds left gave Florida Atlantic University a 78-76 win over Jacksonville State University Monday in Boca Raton. With the win, the Lady Owls improved to 2-0 in Atlantic Sun Conference play and 2-3 overall. Three Lady Owls finished with double-doubles.

Despite being outshot 55 percent to 35 percent in the first half, FAU trailed just 40-39 at the half thanks to 19 second-chance points and a 31-16 edge on the boards.

JSU led most of the second half before a jumper by LaKeita Lee with 3:21 remaining tied the game at 70. Each team would trade points as the game remained tied at 76 after JSU's Shanika Freeman scored from inside the paint with 21 seconds left. That set up Boyland's dramatic game-winner in the ensuing possession for FAU.

"That was her shot, and she knew it was going in," said FAU head coach Chancellor Dugan. "She can elevate her play, and she came through for us."

Boyland finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds off the bench while Tamica Pierce led FAU with 21 points and 10 boards. Lee, a freshman, had career highs with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Chantale Jones finished with a team-high nine assists.

FAU outrebounded JSU 48-34 while being outshot 50 percent to 40 percent. The Lady Owls also went 15-of-19 from the line including Pierce's 6-of-6.

Amanda Tyus led Jacksonville State (1-4, 0-2 A-Sun) with 19 points while Freeman had 18 points and 12 rebounds.

The win was FAU's seventh straight at home dating back to last season. The Lady Owls continue their seven-game home stretch this month with a match-up Saturday afternoon against Dugan's alma mater, Eastern Kentucky, at 3:00pm.
