Owls Lose 70-67 To Winthrop

Nov. 18, 2006

Final Stats

BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University had its chances late in the game, but came up short, losing their second game of the FAU Tip-Off Classic, 70-67 to Winthrop on Saturday.

"This was a game we could have won," said Head Coach Chancellor Dugan. "Getting out-worked on the boards and in the lane was costly tonight."

Tied at 67 with 25 seconds left, FAU had a chance to take the lead, but Andrea Taylor missed a lay-up and then fouled Kathi Ryska who hit one free-throw to take the 68-67 lead. The Owls would get one more chance as Cristal Randolph was put on the line in the one-and-one situation with five seconds on the clock. Randolph missed her first, and Winthrop got the ball back and hit two-free throws to secure the victory.

FAU built a lead as big as 13 in the second frame before Winthrop stormed back with a 12-2 run to take their first lead, 60-59 on a Ryska lay-up with 6:16 remaining. The Eagles final 10-points all came from made free-throws.

The contest was back-and-forth for much of the first half, as the Owls built a lead as large as 26-14, thanks to a Breana Cox trifecta with nine minutes to play in the half. Winthrop fought back and got the score as close as 30-27 with 2:10 remaining.

Cristal Randolph knocked down three triples in the end of the first-half to secure the Owls 41-33 advantage going into the break. She had nine of her 12-points in the opening stanza.

The Owls were lead in scoring by Mistoria Brown's 13 point six rebound effort. She would make the FAU Tip-Off Classic all-tournament team. Adel Lizama had a career-best nine points, while Shuteamia Brayboy had her second straight 10-assist night.

Winthrop was paced by Tiffany Rodd's 22 points on 6-of-11 shooting. Franchesca Davenport, Jessica Fansler, and Ashley Fann were the other Eagles in double-digit scoring.

Florida Atlantic will take on Vanderbilt on Friday at 1 p.m. on the road. Tune in on fausports.com to hear all the action live.
