Owls Move Back Into First with a 70-64 Win Over GWU

BOCA RATON, FL-- Shontavia Williams recorded her third double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds to lift the Florida Atlantic University women's basketball team to a 70-64 victory over Gardner-Webb on Thursday night at FAU Arena. The Owls (15-9, 14-3) are now tied with Belmont for first place in the Atlantic Sun Conference.

The first half was played very closely as the Owls held a 31-30 lead at the break. The first 20 minutes of action featured six lead changes and five ties.

Williams completed a three-point play at the 6:41 mark to give the Owls a 21-19 lead. Missy Glaser deposited a three-ball at the top of the key to put FAU on top by four, 30-26, with 1:44 left in the opening stanza.

The Owls shot 43.3% (13-30) in the first frame and held Gardner-Webb to just 35.5 % from the floor (11-31).

Cristal Randolph buried a triple to give the Owls a 53-41 lead with 9:01 left in the game, but dogs fought back by ripping off a 15-to-3 run to tie the contest at 56 with 3:59 remaining.

FAU cashed in 14-of-16 free throws in the second half, including 9-of-10 in the final four minutes to preserve the win. Williams was a perfect 7-of-7 at the line on the night.

Amanda Bulin scored in double figures for the sixth time over the last nine games as she led FAU with 16 points. Glaser went 2-of-5 from three point land and added 12 points for the Owls.

Laura Povilontye led the Bulldogs with 16 points and Candyse Kelly added 14 points for GWU.
 

 

The Owls will conclude their home schedule on Saturday night when they host Campbell at 7:00 p.m. Shontavia Williams, Amanda Bulin, and Sharia Young will be honored as part of Senior Night.
