Lady Owls Stay Red-Hot

Feb. 19, 2004

Final Stats

BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University picked up its second straight win and fifth in its last seven outings as it defeated Gardner-Webb University, 72-53, Thursday night in Boca Raton. FAU's Shontavia Williams led all scorers with 19 points. Julie Goad scored 13 while Trineca McCleod had 10. FAU (8-14, 7-8 Atlantic Sun Conference) never trailed.

The Lady Owls scored the first eight points of the ball game on their way to a 39-30 halftime lead.

In the second half, Gardner-Webb (5-18, 4-12 A-Sun) pulled to within 45-39 with 13:28 to play before FAU took control of the game. Goad nailed a three-pointer at the 13:12 mark to give FAU a 48-39 lead. Williams followed with a jumper to make it 50-39 with 12:26 left.

Shortly thereafter, Williams made consecutive field goals to give FAU a 54-40 lead with 11:00 remaining. The Bulldogs would never get closer than 11 points the rest of the way as the final margin turned out to be FAU's largest lead.

"I thought we played our most complete game of the year, both offensively and defensively," said FAU head coach Chancellor Dugan. "We still committed way too many turnovers. Shontavia Williams had another terrific game."

FAU shot 38 percent and held Gardner-Webb to 30 percent from the field. The Bulldogs went just 5-for-29 from beyond the arc and were outrebounded by the Lady Owls 54-42. FAU forced 23 turnovers and gave the ball up 17 times.

Williams has led FAU with 21.5 points in the past two games, both victories for FAU.

Florida Atlantic next faces Campbell Saturday night at 7:00pm at FAU Gymnasium.
