Women's Basketball Cruises Past JU

Jan. 3, 2002

Final Stats

JACKSONVILLE, FL - Kristy Halvorsen had 16 points and 11 rebounds as Florida Atlantic University cruised to a 94-76 victory over Jacksonville University Thursday night in Jacksonville, FL. It was the third consecutive victory for FAU (5-6, 3-0 Atlantic Sun Conference) as they forced JU into 37 turnovers.

FAU built as much as a 15 point lead in the first half behind tenacious full-court pressure that resulted in 18 turnovers for the Dolphins. A Chantale Jones three-pointer just before the buzzer gave the Lady Owls a 46-36 lead at the break.

In the second half, JU (1-9, 0-3 A-Sun) cut the deficit to just five points with 12:28 remaining before FAU put the game away with another blitz of full-court pressure. An 18-5 run over the next 4:38 gave Florida Atlantic a 74-56 lead with 7:50 to play. They would lead by as many as 21 before taking the 18 point victory.

"I was pleased with our overall team effort tonight," said FAU head coach Chancellor Dugan. "Our pressure was a big key, especially in the final ten minutes. I also thought Kristy Halvorsen probably played one of the best games of her career."

For Halvorsen, it was her third double-double of the year. She also had six steals and two of FAU's eight blocks. LaKeita Lee and Jones each finished with 13 while Tamica Pierce scored all 10 of her points in the first half. Pierce also added three blocks.

For the game, FAU was outshot 50 percent to 42 percent. The Lady Owls held a 42-38 edge on the boards while going 18-of-22 from the free-throw line. Jones had seven of FAU's season-high 23 steals.

The Lady Owls received 47 points from their bench. Along with Lee and Jones, Sumika Alexander had nine points, while Angie Rodgers had seven points in her first action since suffering a stress fracture in the season opener.

JU was led by Yvette Jackson's 19 points. Lexie Richards added 15.

Florida Atlantic next plays at Stetson Saturday at 2:00pm.
