He defeated Matt Rock of Florida Gulf Coast University in straight sets, winning the opener in a tiebreaker 7-6. Matschke then won the second set 6-3 to move on to Saturday's second round.

Head Coach Brandon Stokes was proud to see the determination from Vardag and Matschke to win their matches in pressure-packed situations.

"Lawrence got to play on the stadium court which was a great learning experience for him," said Stokes. "He had his opportunities with break points throughout the match. Unfortunately, he couldn't capitalize on those chances."

In doubles action, the duo of Abdelnour and Matschke advanced to the second round with an 8-6 victory over a team from Georgia State University. Later in the afternoon they fell by the identical score to the host Bulldogs.
