Obletz Defeated Two World Ranked Players in Prize Money Event
Oct. 10, 2005 Boca Raton, FL - Florida Atlantic University's Kevin Obletz reached the semifinals of the Nunez Fall Open, as an amateur, last weekend in Aventura. The money event featured several world-ranked players as well as the reigning Orange Bowl junior champion. The second round saw Obletz upset no. 3 seed David Gonzalez of Ecuador, 7-5, 2-6, 10-5 in the third set tiebreaker. Gonzalez is currently ranked among the top 1000 professionals in the world. Obletz then defeated no. 5 seed Mikheil Chaduneli of Russia, 6-1, 6-1, in the quarter finals. Chaduneli has been ranked as high as no. 1322 in the world. The semifinals saw the FAU senior face Hamid Mirzadeh, a former top-ten player at the University of Florida and who is currently ranked no. 682 in the world. Obletz gave Mirzadeh all he could handle with a 6-1 second set victory before he fell in a had-fought three set match 6-2, 1-6, 6-4. "These are the kind of results I expect from Kevin (Obletz)," said FAU head coach David Komie. "He's a guy who gives 100% on the court and in the gym, everyday. I am confident that he will build on this and have a strong showing in the NCAA Regional Tournament next weekend in Memphis."
