Men's Soccer Enjoys Successful Season

Nov. 21, 2007

BOCA RATON, FL - The Florida Atlantic University men's soccer team swept both the Atlantic Soccer Conference regular season and tournament crowns in 2007.

The Owls got off to a slow start, losing their first two matches of the season and three of their first four matches. They rebounded to win the FAU Classic and defeating conference foe NJIT in their road match of the season. After losing 3-0 to Florida Gulf Coast on October 4, FAU went 7-1-2 the remainder of the year.

The only loss during that time was a hard fought 4-2 defeat on the road against then no.7 ranked Virginia. FAU clinched the regular season ASC title with 1-0 home victory over Howard on November 3. Head coach Kos Donev was named the ASC Coach of the Year. Liam Ogle, Guiherme Ribiero and Shire Standnes were named to the All-Conference First Team. Phillip Lamarre, Trey McEntee and Diego Monsalve were named to the second team.

The Owls beat NJIT for a second time, this time in the ASC Tournament semifinals to advance to the ASC Championship for the second consecutive year. FAU was able to defeat host Longwood in a dramatic penalty kick tiebreaker to win the ASC Tournament title.

That would be the end of the Owls' season however, as they were not one of the 48 teams invited to take part in the NCAA College Cup. The Owls' 2007 season will still be remembered as one of the best in school history. The squad tied a school record by posting six shutouts for the second straight year. It also brought home the program's first conference title.

Coach Donev's squad is poised to enjoy similar success next year, as they lose only four seniors and return 67 of the 73 points they scored during their historic campaign.
