Men's Soccer Falls To Adelphi 3-2 In ASC Finals

Nov. 5, 2006

Final Stats

GARDEN CITY, NY - The Florida Atlantic University men's soccer team lost 3-2 in the finals of the Atlantic Soccer Conference tournament.

Adelphi jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead when Oliver Skelding scored on a shot from 20 yards out, just out of the reach of FAU keeper Phillip Lamarre. The Panthers would extend their lead in the 25th minute when Keith Rock scored on a scamble in front of the goal off of an Adelphi corner kick. The third Adelphi goal would come when Patrick Figueiredo headed in an indirect free kick.

FAU would begin its comeback attempt in the 53rd minute as Diego Monsalve converted on a penalty kick to make the score 3-1. Shire Standnes would soon follow with sixth goal of the season, on a cross from Borce Ancevski to pull the Owls within one goal. FAU would mount a frantic charge in an attempt to tie the match, however they were unable to convert any of the scoring opportunities.

"It's always difficult to lose in the postseason, especially when you come so close to winning," head men's soccer coach Kos Donev would say after the match.

"We made a lot of progress over the last two and a half weeks. We won three matches in a row to make the conference tournament, then we beat a team (Hartwick) on Friday that beat us pretty bad in the regular season."

FAU ends its season with a 7-9-1 record. Senior Ryan Kinsley, sophomore Shire Standnes and freshman Phillip Lamarre were named to the All-Tournament team.
